Be one of the first to view Artspace Mackay’s latest exhibitions this Friday
As two exhibitions come to an end another two begin, and this Friday night (July 1) Artspace Mackay will unveil its two newest exhibitions: Contemporary Miniatures and Bonney Bombach Memento Mori: Tree of life from 6pm.
Contemporary Miniatures, set to showcase in the McAleese Gallery is a collection-based exhibition drawn from the Queensland Art Gallery’s holdings of miniature paintings from South Asia, which it has been collecting since 1999.
It explores the dynamic visual language of miniature painting and its continued significance in contemporary art practice.
Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said Artspace Mackay is delighted to host Contemporary Miniatures, a Queensland Art Gallery travelling exhibition.
“So far this year the Mackay region has seen such a creative and extraordinary range of exhibitions pass through the facility and I have no doubt that Contemporary Miniatures and the Bonney Bombach exhibitions will engage all who visit to view the works,” she said.
“To have the first sneak peak, I invite residents to come along to the opening night this Friday (July 1).”
Complimenting Contemporary Miniatures in Artspace Mackay’s foyer is Bonney Bombach Memento Mori: Tree of Life.
In a deeply poignant year for the artist, Bombach salvages memories from her family home. Honouring her late centenarian parents, refugees from 1938 Vienna, the photographs, letters and pieces she recovered not only translate as a remarkably personal genealogy, but act also as a symbol of permanence and transition.
From the Latin phrase meaning a reminder of mortality, Memento Mori embodies a rich generational and spiritual connection.
To assist the unveiling of the Contemporary Miniatures exhibition this weekend, Artspace Mackay is thrilled to announce that residents can also attend a free workshop on Saturday (July 2) where one of the featured artists, Khadim Ali will be conducting short courses on Gold Leaf Technique from 10am to 2pm and 1pm to 3pm.
Note bookings are essential for both the opening night and workshops, and both displays will be on show for public viewing from July 1 to August 14.
