Come and see famous street art on show at Artspace Mackay

A groundbreaking exhibition of street art by leading Australian and international graffiti artists is set to open at Artspace Mackay this Friday (March 11) from 6pm.

MAY’S: The May Lane Street Art Project is a survey of the artworks created at May Lane in the inner city suburb of St Peters, Sydney, between 2005 and 2010.

Tugi Balog, Director of the May Lane Arts Association Inc. has been documenting the May Lane project since 2005 when he turned the walls of his business into an outdoor gallery space for street artists. As a result, May’s has a collection of over 100 panels by celebrated Australian and international street artists.

MAY’S: The May Lane Street Art Project features a selection of 25 works from the May’s collection - it is the first comprehensive exhibition of street art to tour nationally.

A partnership project between Bathurst Regional Art Gallery and the May Lane Arts Assocation Inc., the exhibition explores the history and evolution of the Australian street art movement with particular reference to the May Lane project. It provides an opportunity for venues to enter into a dialogue with audiences about street artists, street art, and its position in contemporary culture.

Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May says that bringing art from the street into the gallery not only forces us to look differently at the work, it makes it accessible to a wider variety of audiences.

“It’s very exciting to have an exhibition of works by such leading national and international street artists,” Cr May said.

“This is certainly an exhibition that the youth throughout the region should not miss, and one that will really broaded the attitudes of people of all ages in the community.”

The exhibition includes work by: Adam Hill, B.U.G.A.U.P.,  Chor Boogie (USA), Deb, Die Laughing Collective, Dlux!, Dmote, Cultural Urge, Jumbo, Kenji Nakayama (USA/Japan), Kamion (UK), Luna, Mare, Mini Graff, Nails,  Numskull, Otis, Peque (Mexico), Peru,  Peter Burgess, Phibs, Scram, Spice, Taring Padi Collective (Indonesia), Zap and Zombe.

Cr May encourages residents to attend the floor talk this Saturday (March 12) at 11am which will detail the MAYS history, the works and the artists.

The floor talk will be conducted by Mini Graff, one of the MAYS artists, Tugi Balog, the founder of the project, and Sarah Gurich, curator of Bathurst Regional Gallery.
