High schools to debate graffiti at Artspace

Artspace Mackay is pleased to host a performance debate by high school students taking part in the APEX Secondary Schools Debating Competition on Wednesday 13 April.

Both junior and senior secondary school debating teams will tackle the highly contentious topic ‘Graffiti is art not vandalism’ in a very special event inside the McAleese Gallery, surrounded by the groundbreaking graffiti works of MAY’S: The May Lane street art project exhibition.

Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said she’s delighted that the youth of our community are having conversations about art.

“This kind of debate is exactly what we hope to see in our community,” she said.

“Artspace Mackay hopes to challenge preconceptions and inspire people of all ages in our region with the exhibitions it programs.”

Cr May said she recognises that people’s response to art is personal and very individual and with a topic such as this, it’s really important to recognise both sides of the story.

“The May Lane exhibition is on show at Artspace Mackay and has had an astounding response from the community with 2,575 people viewing the exhibition so far.”

Cr May encourages people to come along to this fascinating night and support our youth in the region and the good work that Apex does in our community.

The junior secondary schools debate starts at 6pm and the seniors debate starts at 7pm, on Wednesday 13 April at Artspace Mackay.

All are welcome to this free event; please RSVP Artspace on 4961 9722.
