Local artist to give floor talk this weekend
Artist Bonney Bombach will deliver a floor talk giving insight into her latest exhibition, Memento Mori: Tree of Life this Saturday, July 16.
The exhibition is on show in the foyer gallery at Artspace Mackay until August 13.
Coinciding with Contemporary Miniatures, a Queensland Art Gallery touring exhibition of miniature paintings from South Asia, Memento Mori is a deeply personal body of work using items painstakingly salvaged from Bombach’s family home after the death of her mother and father who both lived to see their 100th birthdays.
This exhibition has seen Bombach attaching hundreds of objects, recovered from her family home in Melbourne, directly to the walls of the gallery to create an installation which serves as a sort of personal genealogy.
Both Bombach’s parents came to Australia as refugees from Vienna in 1938 bringing with them some furniture, old diaries, photographs and other domestic items, some belonging to Bombach’s grandparents.
Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said Memento Mori is an exhibition that many who view it will identify with.
“While deeply personal to the artist, many will relate to it, comparing their own families and memories with the Bombach’s,” Cr May said.
All are welcome to attend Bonney Bombach’s floor talk this Saturday (July 16) from 11am at Artspace Mackay.
“Artspace is proud to support local artists by offering a galley space of a national standard in which to display works,” she said
“Residents are also encouraged to arrive early at 10.30am on Saturday to join in for Meet the Collection, an opportunity to have a hands-on look at selected works from Mackay Regional Council’s artist book collection.”
