Photography transformed into 3D exhibition

Sculptural photographs taken on a pilgrimage across the northern regions of Spain are the feature to one of the last exhibitions to hit Artspace Mackay in 2011, CAMINO: Recent works by Kim Demuth.

After completing an Australia Council Barcelona Studio Residency during 2005, Kim Demuth was inspired to return in 2008 to walk a 900 kilometre walking trail, the ‘El Camino de Santiago’ – a pilgrimage route dating from the ninth century.

Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said after Kim completed his journey he spent the following year constructing sculptural photographs that celebrate particular times and places from his experiences and discoveries along his travels.

“We’ve held photographic lectures and workshops at Artspace Mackay in the past which have  proved extremely popular, so we know we have many keen photographers in our region who will be inspired by this exhibition,” Cr May said.

The photographs taken during the trek were only the starting point in the production of the work, and then through careful postproduction Demuth combined, transformed these photographic fragments into three dimensional mixed media objects.

Cr May said the display is mesmerising and a wonderful way to keep visiting friends and family entertained while they are in town over the Holiday Season.

Also on show at Artspace in the McAleese Gallery is Colliding Islands, an exhibition that explores and challenges the idea of contemporary landscapes through the work of selected Australian and international practitioners working in a range of artforms.

The display features works on paper, film and installation works by artists Jillian Conrad, Olivier Dollinger, David Hamill, Archie Moore and Heeseop Yoon.
Both exhibitions are now available for viewing until Saturday, January 28, 2012.

Cr May also mentioned that next year will see the statewide celebration of the Queensland Festival of Photography with photographic workshops and exhibitions to be held at Artspace in April.
