Pop art makes a comeback to the region
An exciting exhibition of British pop art is set to open at Artspace Mackay in conjunction with the 2010 Mackay Region Festival of Arts this Friday, July 16.
Paolozzi+Kitaj: British pop prints from the Art Gallery of NSW collection is on show in Artspace Mackay’s McAleese Gallery from July 16 to September 12.
Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said the Mackay region was no stranger to pop art with the blockbuster Andy Warhol pop art exhibition held in 2004 which has become Artspace Mackay’s most successful exhibition to date.
“The Festival of Arts provides residents and visitors with the opportunity to experience and venture to facilities they might not ordinarily visit throughout their normal week,” Cr May said.
“Artspace is excited about the upcoming exhibitions and hopes that it’s one of the highlighted events to see in this year’s program for many people,” she said.
Paolozzi+Kitaj features two major British print portfolios from two artists considered to be a major influence on the British pop art movement in the 1950s, Eduardo Paolozzi and R.B Kitaj.
The collection of colourful screenprints is on loan from the Art Gallery of New South Wales Collection and includes fascinating imagery collages from American magazines of the late-1940s.
Also on show in the Artspace Mackay foyer is Working Through/Turning Pages an exhibition of artists books by Robert Jacks.
Robert Jacks is recognized as one of Australia’s most significant and accomplished abstract artists and a selection of his artist’s books are included in the Mackay Regional Council collection.
Members of the community are invited to attend the exhibition opening held by Tony Bond, Assistant Director of the Art Gallery of NSW this Friday, July 16 at 6pm.
Tony Bond and Robert Jacks will deliver a floor talk for both exhibitions and a selection of artists books by Robert Jacks and his contemporaries from the Mackay Regional Council collection will be available for a ‘hands on’ tour during the Meet the Collection the following day.
