Sarina Art Gallery set to display Lockhart River Art Gang works next week

Sarina residents will have the chance to see works by the Lockhart River Art Gang from Wednesday, September 29.

Prints from the Mackay Regional Council Collection will be on show at the Sarina Art Gallery, Field of Dreams Parkland, Sarina for a week until Tuesday, October 5.

Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said there will be an official opening with Deputy Mayor Darryl Camilleri launching the exhibition at 6pm on Wednesday (Sept 29) which residents are invited to attend.

The Art Gang of Lockhart was established in the early 1990s and includes nationally renowned indigenous artists Rosella Namok, Samantha Hobson, Fiona Omeenyo and Silas Hobson.

“This is a diverse exhibition of 26 selected prints which were gifted to the Mackay Regional Council Collection, Artspace Mackay in 2006,” she said.

“The works will be on display for only a short time so I urge locals to visit sooner rather than later so they don’t miss out on the special viewing,”

Lockhart River Arts Centre artists have been known for many years, both nationally and internationally as “The Art Gang”.

They started in 1995 with a group of young artists, just out of school who were called “The Art Gang” in the same sense that those who worked on the roads were “The Road Gang”.

Lockhart River Aboriginal Community in 850kms north of Cairns and is nestled between Quintell Beach and nearby lush lowland rainforest which boasts a bird life that draws watchers from across the world.

Cr May said the coastal environment is highly featured as a common thread in the artists work.
