State’s Art Gallery professionals converge on Mackay

Museum and Gallery Services Queensland will hold their State Conference in Mackay from tomorrow (August 11), bringing industry professionals from throughout Queensland to our region.

The three day conference will attract about 150 museum and gallery delegates to the region and deliver master classes, lectures and papers relating to the current and future climate of gallery operations in Australia.

Among the keynote speakers, Norman Richards (Building Design and Interiors) and Steve Chaddock (Timeline Heritage Consultants) will deliver their findings from a case study of Artspace Mackay conducted earlier this year.

The paper, entitled ‘Pilot project: A sustainable design refit for Artspace Mackay’, will complement a green initiatives focus for the state conference, highlighting the important of carbon footprint reduction.

Community Services and Facilities councillor Karen May said the focus of many of the papers being delivered will be incredibly relevant to the museum and gallery workers of today who face issues such as the move towards sustainability and disaster management.

“Recent events, such as the Queensland Floods, where parts of the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane were underwater, highlight the need for efficient contingency plans,” Cr May said.

“Fortunately in the case of GOMA, they handled the floods exceptionally well and its hoped delegates will walk away with information that they can apply directly in their own institutions.”

The Museum and Gallery Services Queensland State Conference will be held at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre from tomorrow through to Saturday.
