Step into the world of the surreal at family fun day this Saturday!
Artspace Mackay invites the whole family to come along and enjoy a free day of art activities to kick off the September school holidays this weekend on Saturday (Sept 17).
The theme for the day is Surrealism for Kids on Tour presented by Artspace Mackay and Queensland Art Gallery in conjunction with Surrealism: The Poetry of Dreams on show until October 2 at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), Brisbane.
Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said Artspace Mackay will be one of 52 regional venues to host Surrealism for Kids on Tour.
Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said we have a record number of regional venues taking part in this tour, providing children and families in remote and regional communities with the opportunity to engage with surrealist artist through multimedia, drawing and making activities.
“The projects have been developed to offer children and families insight into how some of the most powerful and imaginative art of the twentieth century was created,” he said.
Surrealism for Kids on Tour will feature seven different activities based on creative games played by surrealist artists including collage, drawing and sculpture making activities allowing children to participate in text, visual and language games.
Cr May said visitors might recognise names such as Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst.
“It will be exciting to see how children react to the same games that have inspired the artists of the Surrealist movement.”
