Students inspired by artist book collection
Year 10 art students at Mirani State High School have recently enjoyed a special visit from Artspace Mackay staff.
The students who have been learning all about artist book concepts and creation have just had their own special viewing of a selection of artists books from Mackay Regional Council’s own collection.
The lesson arranged by art teacher Melissa Larsen in conjunction with Artspace staff was for students to explore a selection of artists books to gain an insight and knowledge for when they will need to create their own artist book over the coming weeks.
Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said it’s not often Artspace gets the opportunity to take the collection on the road so it was something special to make the trip out to one of the region’s rural schools.
Consisting of approximately 610 artist books, Mackay Regional Council’s collection is now the largest regional collection of its kind in Australia with over 800 pieces including proof prints and printing block items.
“Mackay Regional Council is delighted that teachers in our community are recognising the value of our collection and helping us make it more accessible to students of all ages throughout the region,” she said.
“Artspace is more than just an art gallery; it’s very diverse to ensure we serve a wide majority of the community, from workshops, exhibitions, souvenirs, functions and more.”
Cr May said it’s exciting to see the students taking inspiration from our collection and it would be wonderful to see the student’s work that results from these kinds of collaborations between Artspace and schools in the region.
Schools wishing to explore Mackay Regional Council’s artist book collection can arrange for special ‘hands-on’ tours. Teachers can contact Artspace Mackay on 4961 9722 to discuss the opportunities that are available.
Artspace Mackay’s Cox Rayner Gallery also features ongoing exhibitions curated from the artist book collection which are always popular with visitors.
