Votes are in for the winner of the 2011 Artstreet People’s Choice Award

The votes from the 2011 Artstreet People’s Choice Award are in and Mirani State High School student Tristan Kane’s shopfront display at Lighting Network Mackay has come up trumps.

The window, entitled “New York State of Mind”, received a total of 89 votes and was a clear favourite ahead of the second highest tally at 57.

Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said the partnership between Tristan and Lighting Network Mackay was also awarded a commendation in the Judge’s Prize.

"Tristan created an impressive display that was a creative take on this year’s Mackay Region Festival of Arts theme, Light and Water,” Cr May said.

"It was quite easy to see that this was going to be a popular choice with voters; as a lot of work had gone into the display,” she said.

The popular community arts project in its third year encouraged the public to collect a map and vote at participating businesses.

Cr May said in total almost 400 votes were collected for the 21 artist-business partnerships involved.

Local artists Rosemary Payne and Wanda Bennett collaborated with NewsXpress in Victoria Street to create the Judge’s Prize winner of the 2011 Artstreet shopfront display.
