The Libris Awards are Australia's premier national artists' book prize, bringing together the best artists' books from around Australia. An initiative of the Mackay City Council through Artspace Mackay, these biennial awards seek to develop awareness of the Council's significant collection of artists' books and to develop the collection further through the acquisition of new works by leading Australian artists working in this field.

The foreigner in ourselves: Recent works by Clyde McGill
Winner of the 2006 Libris Awards, Clyde McGill, presents an exhibition of recent works in the foyer of Artspace Mackay. McGill's work looks at the edges, portals, the porous lines and the suffusion that occurs between the inside and the outside.

CONFERENCE
4th Australian Artists' Book Forum
Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 February 2008 at the Mackay Entertainment Centre

The Australian Artists' Book Forum organised by Artspace Mackay has quickly become the country's primary event for the book arts and artists' book creators throughout the country. MASTERCLASSES
Tow-day advanced workshops on printmaking, bookbinding and papermaking with leading Australian artists.

Masterclass 1: Introduction to Pulp Printing with Tim Mosely
Thursday 7 & Friday 8 February 2008, 10am - 4pm
Paxton's Warehouse, River Street, Mackay
Pulp printing is a process recently developed by Tim Mosely at Southern Cross University by which imagery (such as photographs) are generated within a sheet of paper, that is, the image is the paper. The technique has drawn international attention in both Europe and the USA and offers significant diversity to the scope of a papermakers' repertoire of techniques. This workshop equipped participants with the essentials of a pulp printing technique that can generate multi-layered images within a sheet of paper using only paper pulp. During the two-day workshop participants: were introduced to the fundamentals of printing with pulp; experimented with layers of imagery and colours; and made sheets of paper embedded with pulp printing.

About the artist:
Tim Mosely trained as a printmaker in Sydney under the Brazilian printmaker Roberto De Lamonica. From his initial training he has had an interest in papermaking and artists' books. Completing an MA in 1996 his art practice now integrates all these three mediums under the name Silverwattle Press. With over 25 years of professional experience and an output of over 50 unique and editioned artists' books, Tim is represented in prominent Australian and international artists' books collections.

Masterclass 2: Print...Book...Box with Glen Skien
Thursday 7 & Friday 8 February 2008, 10am - 4pm
Mackay Town Hall, Sydney Street, Mackay

This workshop encouraged participants to create their own prints, either through intaglio (drypoint etching) or relief (linocut) printmaking methods. Participants incorporated these images as collage pieces within book designs and box structures. Using traditional rice papers as well as less conventional materials such as newsprint, brown paper, masking tape, pattern-making papers, participants experimented with the often subtle relationships between both printmaking and collage.

About the artist:
Mackay artist Glen Skien is currently completing a Masters of Fine Art at the Queensland College of Art, Brisbane. His work has been shown extensively throughout Australia. Glen's recent studio practice is concerned with deconstructing the tradition of multiple print editions. Recent works incorporate reworked printed images on unusual surfaces, collage elements and found objects.
