Prints From The Lockhart River Art Gang The Lockhart River Art Gang originated as a group of young artists from the remote Cape York Aboriginal community of Lockhart River, located on the coastline about 850 kilometers north of Cairns. Art students in the community participated in print-making workshops conducted by some of Australia's leading printmakers, including Yvonne Boag, Theo Tremblay and Basil Hall. This collection of early prints by the 'Art Gang' illustrates how the young artists developed a unique style of synthesizing tradition visual culture and mythological themes with imagery and ideas drawn from everyday contemporary life in the Lockhart River community. Several of the young artists represented in this collection of prints have gone on to become internationally recognized artists, such as Rosella Namok, Samantha Hobson and Fiona Omeenyo. This group of prints is part of an archive of forty-four items by members of the Lockhart River Art Gang, generously donated by Geoff and Fran Barker to Artspace Mackay through the Federal Government's Cultural Gifts Program in 2006. |
