Schools Program

Developing Creative Minds

Artspace Mackay offers schools from throughout Central and North Queensland opportunities for their students to work with the art and history of our region. Our schools program provides access to artistic exhibitions and activities suitable for students from preschool, primary, secondary and tertiary levels and includes a range of 'hands-on' activities as well as our successful guided tours by our trained volunteer guides.

School Group Tours

Artspace Mackay offers four types of tours:

Exhibition Based Guided Tours

Focussing upon the main exhibition on display at Artspace Macay theses tours can provide a way of exploring topics of social, cultural and historical interest, as applicable in your classroom program.

Viewing the Artists' Book Collection

This offers students the oppertunity to view and handle artists' books from the Mackay Regional Council Collectionheld in the Tate Adams Reading Room.

Thematic Guided Tours

These examine a particular visual art element or concept, or a particular medium of your choice (dependent upon exhibitions on display at the time). The focus of the tour may also be linked to thematic units of work being undertaken in the classroom, across key learning areas.

Self Guided Tours

During these visits, their teachers independently lead their students through the exhibition spaces. If planning a self guided tour please contact the Education Officers to organise a suitable time.

Workshops and Tutorials

Artspace Mackay can also organise workshops or tutorials with local and visiting artists as part of your school's visit. A minimun of 28 days is required to organise workshops and tutorials.

Please Note:

The provision of guided tours is a free service available to Preschool, Primary and Secondary school and tertiary education groups (TAFE, University) that book in advance.

A minimum of 15 days notice is required to secure a guide's service when booking. So plan ahead for your visit!

Tours aim to include content that will meet your students' needs and complements your teaching and learning program. We are happy to tailor tours to meet your needs. For example you may wish to combine a viewing of the artists' books collection with a practicle workshop or a guided tour of a touring exhibition.

Guided tours are available on the hour, from Tuesdays to Fridays between 10am and 3pm (Artspace Mackay is closed on Mondays).

The tours will be conducted by one of our Volunteer Friends or by Tracey Heathwood, Public Programs Manager.

Special tours can be arranged for students with disabilities or special requirements.

For further advice on how to integrate an Artspace Mackay visit into your program, please telephone Tracey Heathwood , Public Programs Manager on 07 4961 9722 or email artspace@mackay.qld.gov.au

We look forward to seeing your and your students at Artspace Mackay.
