A Mackay Australian South Sea Islander photographic exhibition
Artspace Mackay Foyer, 8 November 2019 – 16 February 2020

Sacred Ink: Connecting to culture is an Artspace Mackay exhibition delivered in partnership with the Mackay and District Australian South Sea Islander Association (MADASSIA), which explores how the art of tattooing has been embraced by local Australian South Sea Islanders as a means of cultural connection to, and affirmation of, their South Sea Islander heritage. Selected participants will be asked to share the stories of their tattoos and how these intersect with themes of family, heritage and identity by sitting for photographic portraits with local photographer Jim Cullen and participating in a face-to-face interview with Artspace Mackay staff.
