2017 is a significant year that marks the 150th anniversary of the arrival of South Sea Islanders to Mackay. This anniversary is a significant milestone for our local Australian South Sea Islander (ASSI) community and an important part of Australia’s history.
Australian South Sea Islanders, despite the hardships they have suffered, are a strong and dynamic community who continue to make an enormous contribution to all aspects of life, not only in the Mackay region, but in the broader Australian community as well.
A selection of objects from the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences aims to introduce viewers to the cultural diversity, vitality and spirit resonance of Oceanic art and to some of its universe of forms, both old and new.
