Kids art workshops inspired by famous Australian Indigenous artist Danie Mellor

Eton State School students

As part of Artspace Mackay’s Danie Mellor Artist in residence project, Artspace brought 250 primary school children from outlying regional schools in July/August for outdoor art-making workshops at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens.

These fun and educational outdoor workshops gave these children a wonderful opportunity to work with local artists who have met and been inspired by Danie Mellor during his residency in Mackay.

The artworks created by the children will be displayed at Artspace Mackay in November alongside the works that Danie Mellor himself will produce for our Mackay Regional Council Collection. During the week, the young artists had perfect weather with bright blue skies – an inspiring setting for making art and growing a connection with nature.

Artspace Mackay Foundation, Mackay Regional Council and BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal have enabled Artspace Mackay to develop this wonderful project in celebration of M150. The project will culminate in November when Artspace Mackay unveils the Danie Mellor commissioned works, celebrating the flora, fauna and community histories of our region. The works will be on display in the Cox Rayner Gallery at this time alongside the wonderful works that were produced by children from throughout our Mackay region during these workshops.
