Annual Appeal 2020

With the collective generosity and unwavering support of donors, Artspace Mackay has already achieved some outstanding triumphs, and with your future support we can build and strengthen our foundations in support of our community.

John Brack

In 2020 we invite you to make a donation to support a major acquisition of an artist’s book with historical and cultural significance to Artspace Mackay and the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection, by one of Australia’s iconic twentieth century artists John Brack.

John Brack was one of Australia's most outstanding artists. He was born in Melbourne in 1920, and his work first achieved prominence in the 1950s. For over forty years he was at the forefront of Australian art and produced some of our most iconic images. More than any other Australian artist of his generation, Brack was a painter of modern life - its starkness, its shadows and its brooding self-reflection. His work is characterised by a kind of caustic realism and a strong sense of alienation, undercut with dry, sardonic humour.

The proposed acquisition – the artist’s book John Brack: Nudes - was produced by Lyre Bird Press in 1982 and features fifteen lithograph prints of nudes by John Brack bound beautifully in a hard-covered folio with leather spine. As the only deluxe art book produced by Brack in his lifetime, printed by the iconic North Queensland-based Lyre Bird Press, this rare work will be a significant and valuable addition to the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection, which is widely renowned for its large holding of artists’ books.

We need your help to secure this prized work for our collection. Our funding goal for 2020 is $10,000 and today we ask you to consider a donation to the Artspace Mackay Foundation to help us acquire this prized artwork.

Financial contributions of all sizes play a vital role in Artspace Mackay's sustained success. You can give with confidence, knowing all funds raised from your donation will be directly re-invested into Mackay’s community through Artspace Mackay. The Foundation is registered with the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) and therefore all donations of $2 and over are fully tax deductible.
