Annual Appeal 2020

We sincerely thank all those who contributed to the 2019 Artspace Mackay Foundation Appeal to support the large-scale community art project and art installation Take Root (Colony): Project Another Country by international artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan. Your valued support ensured that this amazing community project was enjoyed by more than 7,000 residents.  Students, new migrants and gallery visitors participated in workshops and drop-in art activities throughout our region, culminating in the incredibly large-scale art installation in Artspace Mackay’s main gallery in June 2019.

With the collective generosity and unwavering support of donors, Artspace Mackay has achieved some outstanding triumphs, and with your future support we can build and strengthen our foundations in support of our community.

John Brack

In 2020 we invite you to make a donation to support a major acquisition of an artist’s book with historical and cultural significance to Artspace Mackay and the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection, by one of Australia’s iconic twentieth century artists John Brack.

John Brack was one of Australia's most outstanding artists. He was born in Melbourne in 1920, and his work first achieved prominence in the 1950s. For over forty years he was at the forefront of Australian art and produced some of our most iconic images. More than any other Australian artist of his generation, Brack was a painter of modern life - its starkness, its shadows and its brooding self-reflection. His work is characterised by a kind of caustic realism and a strong sense of alienation, undercut with dry, sardonic humour.

The proposed acquisition – the artist’s book John Brack: Nudes - was produced by Lyre Bird Press in 1982 and features fifteen lithograph prints of nudes by John Brack bound beautifully in a hard-covered folio with leather spine. As the only deluxe art book produced by Brack in his lifetime, printed by the iconic North Queensland-based Lyre Bird Press, this rare work will be a significant and valuable addition to the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection, which is widely renowned for its large holding of artists’ books.

We need your help to secure this prized work for our collection. Our funding goal for 2020 is $10,000 and today we ask you to consider a donation to the Artspace Mackay Foundation to help us acquire this prized artwork.

Financial contributions of all sizes play a vital role in Artspace Mackay's sustained success. You can give with confidence, knowing all funds raised from your donation will be directly re-invested into Mackay’s community through Artspace Mackay. The Foundation is registered with the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) and therefore all donations of $2 and over are fully tax deductible.

The art of giving

“A hundred times every day, I remind myself that my inner and outer life depends on the labours of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the measure as I have received and am still receiving” Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

Making a gift of funds

Your gift ensures that the excellence in educational/public programs and exhibitions, the collection of fine art and the gallery’s future financial stability and independence are maintained.

Cash gifts can be made as once-only gifts or pledged over a period of time suitable to you.

From time to time the Foundation may conduct very specific campaigns for a targeted need.  The Foundation is however always able to receive gifts for any general purpose. At times, unrestricted or general funds will go to the area of greatest need whether it is education program development, scholarships, acquisitions or exhibitions.

Funds may also be retained from time to time to build the endowment fund where investments are structured to deliver perpetual source of funding support.

The names of all donors (but not amounts) will be published annually in the Foundation report and may also be displayed from time to time in the Gallery.

Making a gift of art

The Foundation welcomes offers of gifts of artwork for the collection and will discuss any intentions in this regard with the donor and with the management of the Artspace Mackay in accordance with the current collection policy.

Where appropriate, Artspace Mackay and/or the Foundation may assist in valuing your gift and submitting your claim as a tax deduction through the government’s cultural gifts program.
