Artspace Mackay volunteers assist staff in delivering an array of services to the public and help ensure the smooth operation of the gallery.
Tasks include:
- Assisting with opening and closing the gallery
- Delivering great customer service to visitors of the gallery and gallery shop
- Monitoring the galleries to ensure artworks remain secure
- Processing sales
- Taking enquiries in person and over the phone
- Assisting in the preparation of public programs
- Mail distribution
Artspace Mackay volunteers may also assist the gallery on special events such as exhibition openings, free family art days and public programs.
Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded individuals, provides participants with skills and training and can offer references for individual's resumes.
Artspace Mackay provides a great opportunity for those with spare time and who are willing to give back to the community. In return for their time, volunteers have the opportunity to work for an organisation that is highly regarded in the industry and strives to deliver exhibitions and public programs of exceptional quality. In addition, volunteers will be exposed to a fun, highly supportive and professional team.
Requirements
Ideally, Artspace volunteers commit to work once a fortnight on either a morning or afternoon shift and are supported by a co-volunteer in this time.
Volunteers will also have great communication skills and basic telephone and computer skills.
Volunteers are not required to be artists or have any background in the arts however an interest and willingness to learn is essential with training provided on-the-job.

The Visual Arts Advisory Committee (VAAC) provides advice to council on the ongoing development and management of the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection and the installation of art in public places.
The voluntary advisory committee meets quarterly or as required to:
- consider new acquisitions for and donations to the Art Collection and appropriate de-accessions;
- provide feedback and advice on proposed public art projects; and,
- support the development and implementation of systems, policies and practices that ensure sound management of the Art Collection.
The VAAC is comprised of council officers and members of the local arts community who reflect the diverse visual arts practices, culture and geography of the Mackay Regional Council area. Committee terms are for a period of four (4) years and the positions are voluntary.
