Jasmine Togo-Brisby is an Australian South Sea Islander artist whose practice illuminates the existence and experience of the Australian South Sea Islander community, to testify to the value and power of visibility. In Vessel of my Vessel, Togo-Brisby continues an ongoing body of photographic work started in 2020 based on her experience at the site of the former slave ship, Don Juan. This series engages the complex dynamics of surrealist photography to explore the concept of bodies – human or otherwise – as vessels (or wombs), as well as the anti-slavery legacy of reclaiming agency over one’s own body.
